Edgewood Children's Ranch Research Farm & Educational Center

As a brief summary, Edgewood Children’s Ranch (ECR), formally known as the Edgewood Boys Ranch, was started in 1966 by a Juvenile Court Judge, D. Arthur Yergey. Originally, Judge Yergey sought to find a residential facility for young boys who had a need for work with social behavior and were in need of structure. The Judge was in contact with Jack Lynd who, subsequently, opened the Ranch in 1968. The Ranch consisted of 110 acres which was donated by “Aunt Minnie Rouse” and was meant to be an alternative route for these children. In following years, girls were added to the program, creating “Edgewood Children’s Ranch”, rather than “Edgewood Boys Ranch”. The Ranch currently cares for troubled/misunderstood children ranging in ages 6 to 18 years. Bruce Myrick, a volunteer at the Ranch had a vision for making the Ranch self-sufficient in the production of its own fruits and vegetables. Bruce contacted Professor Javier Garces at Valencia College. The two of them discussed what the Horticulture Program at the college could do to help both the college and the ranch. Six students from the college volunteered to assist with the making of raised beds and in-ground production of local grown food. Through a student of Professor Garces’, the Professor was introduced to a long-time farmer, Charles Trolley, who had a farm in Upstate New York. Charles has also farmed in Florida and Hawaii on research seed farms. With the efforts of these men, and the assistance of students and volunteers, the Ranch has established a garden to produce vegetables to add homegrown items to the menu and to teach the students at Valencia and the children at the Ranch, the value of growing food. The Ranch is now looking to expand out to the community. Given the harvest generated this Spring Season, the Ranch has found that there is much more harvest than the Ranch can utilize for the children and they now wish to distribute the harvest to others.
